Guarding My Heart: Because Everything I Do Flows From It

One of the greatest lessons I’ve had to learn is how to guard my heart. Not in a way that walls me off from love, friendships, or opportunities, but in a way that protects the wellspring of my soul, the place where my thoughts, emotions, and decisions are birthed.
The truth is, what I allow into my heart eventually shows up in my words, actions, and choices. If I let bitterness take root, it flows out as resentment. If I allow fear to take the driver’s seat, it flows out as hesitation and missed opportunities. If I soak in God’s truth and love, it flows out as grace, wisdom, and strength.
Proverbs 4:23 says, “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” That scripture has been both a warning and a reminder for me. A warning because it means I can’t afford to let just anything or anyone take up residence in my heart. A reminder because when I protect that sacred place, I begin to live from a position of clarity, peace, and purpose.
Guarding my heart looks like:
Setting boundaries - knowing when to say no without guilt and when to create space from toxic influences.
Watching what I consume - not just food and drink, but conversations, music, social media, and even the thoughts I meditate on.
Choosing forgiveness - not because it’s easy, but because holding grudges poisons me more than it punishes anyone else.
Leaning into God’s presence - filling my heart daily with prayer, scripture, and moments of stillness so that His voice is louder than the noise around me.
Guarding my heart doesn’t mean hiding it away. It means being intentional with who and what has access to it. It’s about stewardship, treating my heart as the precious vessel it is, because everything I do flows from there. And when I guard my heart well, I notice the difference. My relationships become healthier, my spirit steadier, and my steps more aligned with the path God has laid out for me. So today, I’m reminding myself and encouraging you too: your heart is worth protecting. Guard it, not out of fear, but out of love, for yourself, for your purpose, and for the One who gave you that heart in the first place.
